Proposal title | Operation of the Lower Granite Dam Adult Trap |
Proposal ID | 200500200 |
Organization | Northwest Fisheries Science Center |
Short description | Operation of the adult salmonid trap in the fish ladder at Lower Granite Dam. |
Information transfer | Information collected from the Lower Granite Dam adult salmon trap will be used primarily for run reconstructions of fall chinook salmon, spring/summer chinook salmon, and steelhead. Run reconstructions are required in the U.S. v Oregon process for use in setting harvest levels, setting production levels, and will be used by NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service for determining stock status and trends for delisting decisions. In addition, information obtained from adult fall chinook salmon scale samples will be used to determine whether juveniles migrated to sea as subyearlings or yearlings. Adult trap data (collected primarily by NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service) will be provided to various agencies including the USFWS, WDFW, NPT, and IDFG in both electronic and written form. An annual report describing trap activities will be provided to BPA each year. |

Year | Accomplishments |
---|---|
2005 | The adult trap at Lower Granite Dam was operated from 8 March through 28 July and 6 September through 21 November during 2005. Fall Chinook salmon broodstock were collected for Lyons Ferry Hatchery and the Nez Perce Tribal Hatchery programs. |
Section 5. Relationships to other projects
Funding source | Related ID | Related title | Relationship |
---|---|---|---|
BPA | 198335000 | Nez Perce Tribal Hatchery O&M | The Lower Granite Dam adult trap will provide natural-origin fall chinook broodstock for the Lyons Ferry Hatchery (a Lower Snake River Compensation Plan hatchery) and the Nez Perce Tribal Hatchery fall Chinook program in the Clearwater Subbasin. |
BPA | 198903500 | Umatilla Hatchery O&M - ODFW | Stray fish from the Umatilla hatchery program will be removed using the Lower Granite Dam adult trap. |
BPA | 200203200 | Fall Chin Passage Lower Granit | Scales take from adults from the Lower Granite dam adult trap are necessary for this project to determine whether juveniles migrate as subyearlings (ocean type) or yearlings (reservoir type life history). |
BPA | 199801005 | Pittsburg Landing Fall Chinook | Lyons Ferry Hatchery provides fall Chinook juveniles for this supplementation program. Increased use of natural-origin broodstock at LFH would benefit the program. |
Other: USACE | [no entry] | Fall Chinook transport studies | Scales taken from adults from the Lower Granite Dam adult trap are necessary for COE funded studies of transportation. |
Other: USACE | [no entry] | Adult passage radio telemetry studies | Lower Granite Dam adult trap used to capture adult salmonids for radio telemetry studies (U of I), both for tagging and tag removal. |
Other: US vs OR | [no entry] | U.S. vs OR run reconstruction | Data collected using the Lower Granite Dam adult trap provides important information for run reconstruction, required under the U.S. v Oregon process. |
Other: NMFS TRTs | [no entry] | Evaluation of stock status | Determination of wild/hatchery composition and age-class distribution of adults used by NMFS and Technical Recovery Teams to estimate return rates of listed Snake River spring/summer chinook salmon. |

ISRP PRELIMINARY REVIEW (Jun 2, 2006)
Recommendation: Fundable
NPCC comments: The importance of the Lower Granite Dam adult trap is described in good detail. This project is clearly linked to several other high priority projects, and the proposal provides adequate justification for continued funding support. Although the justification focuses upon NOAA Fisheries requirements, there is an obvious benefit to Council's Fish and Wildlife Program by providing data need for implementation of several subbasin plans.
